March 2018

Collage of photosThe club meeting in March (1st Fri of every month) was cancelled through lack of interest. Only joking! That was the evening when we had the ‘beast from the east’ with heavy snow and icy roads.

We had a top speaker from the RSGB lined up and were expecting a good turnout but the Committee took the decision to cancel as it would have been dangerous for members and visitors driving home at 10pm when the roads would been a sheet of ice.

We had a extra net instead, controlled by Norman M0FZW, with contributions from club and non-club members on a range of topics and followed-up, as these information exchanges often are, with emails and website links to help each other in the hobby.

Two weeks later, at the TARGet Nite (3rd Fri of every month), the snow had gone and we have an excellent turnout of thirty-five members dressed in their TARG-tops are wearing their name badges for the visit of the Mayor.

Club members brought construction projects and other examples radio kit from the many different areas that pique their particular interest.

We had antennas, 3D printing, Morse Code, SDR, and Ben G1JLD even brought an oscilloscope.

The Mayor, Cllr Brian Woods, was accompanied by his wife Anne, and they took it turns to operate the club radio. Hence the title of the press release “Mayor on Air”. This was the same catch-phrase was the printed on the side of a commemorative club mug presented to them at the end of their visit. They also received a club mini-torch each and a bottle opener.

Present at the time were our younger member, Jenson 9yrs who is booked in to take his Foundation Course in May, and our eldest member (so far as I know!), Lesley G4JDS; which demonstrates the hobby appeals to enthusiasts of all ages.

We also welcomed several senior members from Chelmsford Amateur Radio Group showing that local clubs can work together for the benefit of all our members.

This was also the month in which the role of Club Secretary was transferred to Mark M0IE0. We are very grateful to Norman M0FZW, a founder member of the club, who has relinquished the Secretary role, and helped with the ever increasing club administration for many years.
