Training with TARG

TrainingTraining and retention are essential to promote the hobby – so there is quite a lot of information on this page.

Since 2013 Thames Amateur Radio Group has provided formal training to over 100 candidates with more courses arranged for 2018.

Our style of training, which has proved to be highly successful, is to offer intensive tutoring over one or two weekends culminating in sitting the RSGB examination at the club premises.

  • Foundation: An intense 2 day course held over one weekend.
  • Intermediate: An intensive four day course, held over two consecutive weekends.
  • Advanced: Mentoring in support of the “Bath Based” online training (over 4 months) and on-site examination.

New for 2018: TARG will be adopting the online examination once this released by the RSGB later in the year. The advantage is that results are known instantly whereas with the paper exam it can take a while for the papers to be posted and formally marked.

All course materials are provided, except text books which students are encouraged to purchase in advance, and refreshments are provided throughout the day. The cost includes the RSGB examination fee, materials and refreshments.

All our trainers (photo below) have completed the RSGB “Train the Trainers” Course. With so many qualified trainers we can provide group and one-to-one support. It allows for a variety of presentation styles to aid the different types of learning needed for our students.

FAQ: Do I have to be a TARG member? No. Many people who complete our training are impressed by the club and then decide to join TARG but there is no requirement or exception of membership.
